So we are all aware that these past few years the “indie” “hipster” “alternative” clothing, music and basically everything has become more mainstream than “mainstream” or “pop.” While we could all sit here and argue about who liked The Smiths first while taking artistic pictures for Instagram, lets get down to the nitty gritty.

The indie scene has been made popular by so many awesome famous faces such as Hayley Williams, Ed Sheeran, and Zooey Deschanel. The entire point of being “indie” is to be individual and literally "Independant." If the entire population is claiming to be indie while all wearing the same “hipster” top from supre, I’m quite sure this purpose is defeated. This doesn’t mean you should get all your clothes from the thrift store and hand me downs from your grandmother either. So I will give you some wonderful tips on how to truly be yourself without worrying about blending in or standing out. (Clothes wise)

Eight Step Meltdown

  1. Don’t put a label on your style, this only puts restrictions up.
  2. Get inspirations. Places, culture, a point in time, t.v shows, characters, nature, magazines, the rich and famous, runway, designers, boutiques and op shops.
  3. Dress for your body type and what you truly feel comfortable and confident in.
  4. Close your eyes and visualise walking into your most favourite place in the world (even if you’ve never been there before) and whatever you are wearing is what you should aim for.  The perfect scenario.
  5. Source out stores that make/ sell what you are after (that’s what google is for)
  6. You can buy plain clothing from your local shopping centre and add your own lace, buttons, sequins, tule, studs, flowers, patches, whatever you’re into.
  7. Don’t think about fitting in or standing out. Just be YOU-nique.
  8. Walk into that room confidently and no one will question you. (You might even get some lovely compliments and wolf whistles)
So can we please stop being so obsessed with being cool and different and just start being ourselves? Leave me your fabulous opinions down below and have a wonderful day!
